Love your journey, Grow in it.
“God cannot bless who you pretend to be or who you compare yourself to; He can only bless you and the lane that was created for you”.
- Sarah Jakes Robert
I’ve never seen anyone succeed at being anything but themselves. For the most part of my life, I’ve been greatly influenced by a lot of admirable people especially women. Jumoke Adenowo, Christine Caine, Sarah Jakes Robert, Oprah Winfrey, Serena Williams and so many others. I was motivated by their confidence, speaking style, character and lifestyle. And in as much as these women were only there to inspire me, I found myself obsessing so much over them that I lost my touch. I tried to be all of them at once. I forgot that learning from them and using the lessons to prune myself and not necessarily copy them was what I was meant to do. Now I don’t know if this habit was formed from my high school days where I wanted so badly to be like the girls who were “seen” as I felt invisible for the better part of my teenage years but what I do know was that I so badly tried to find my identity in other people. Be it my peers, family members, relationships and Bruh!! , it put me in a whole mess…. (A whole one). This habit went on for so long until I eventually hit rock bottom because I had become so many people at once that it became impossible to keep up. Then the search for who I truly was began and I deeply started to soul search and being a Christian, God became my resting place and comfort. Few years down, I came across a bible verse that resonated with me. Genesis 1:31; Genesis is basically the book in the Bible that describes creation in its entirety. But this verse says “Then God looked over all He had made, and He saw that it was very good!” This was amazing to me. God created everything including myself and saw that I was “very good!” and at that point in my life, I stopped trying so hard to be on my own and I eventually became. You are good, in your misunderstood, weird, odd yet special kind of way. Don’t let anybody tell you different.
Now even if you’re not a Christian. The fact remains that you matter! You’re worth being on this earth and not merely surviving but thriving. God can only bless the journey you’re on and not the journey of another person you’re trying to be. The moment you start losing touch with yourself and environment, you pause and check yourself. Check your priorities, why you’re doing what you’re doing, what it means to you and how it’s going to enrich your life. Answering all these questions truly will inevitably draw you back to why you started the journey in the first place. It will highlight the road map of your life, help you find your source whatever it may be; (and by source and I mean what it is you believe in) and finally help you make specific goals, pray specific prayers and be intentional there onwards.
Great people can only inspire and motivate you to do better and be better. They shouldn’t alter who you are or make you feel less just because you haven’t attained the heights they have. Do not be afraid to be you; it is the only best version you can be and no matter what, don’t give up on the search for who you are. If it’s something you can and should look for, then it’s something that can and should be found.
